Kind, quiet, pro multi-tasker and beautiful are just a few qualities I would use to describe Rachel. She is a fellow boy mama and her skin is literally flawless. She is major #skingoals and major #friendgoals . Rachel started at PHI as Lisa’s apprentice and has worked her butt off to get where she is today. Her patients love her attention to detail and her kind, gentle demeanour. Her co-workers love her kiddie lunch snacks and her willingness to help out all the time. I can’t wait for you to learn more about her life outside of PHI and skin health according to Rachel.

RACHEL ON HER SKINCARE JOURNEY

I am embarrassed to say this, but up until a few years ago, I was one of the people who thought I needed nothing more than a makeup wipe and a drugstore moisturizer. I slept in my makeup and washed my face the next morning with a wipe. I was one of the lucky ones until I hit my late 20s. Out of nowhere, fine lines were appearing and my cute freckles (sun damage) were not so cute anymore. I knew I had to do more for my skin!

My overall skin type is normal to dry with mild sensitivities. Besides prevention and anti-aging, my main concern would be pigmentation due to many years of not wearing sunscreen. For anyone who is reading this – SPF is non-negotiable! You NEED to wear sunscreen.

I am a busy mom of 3 young boys. I admit that I have trouble finding the time and energy to complete a full skincare routine all the time. So yes, I occasionally use make-up wipes and sleep in my make-up from time to time. Need I remind you? 3. Little. Boys. However, I love pampering my skin and testing out all the products so I can provide the best recommendations to my patients.

I have numerous favorites for skincare products. Here is my current go-to morning skincare routine:

1. Cleanse – SkinCeuticals Simply Clean Gel

2. Tone – ZO Complexion Renewal Pads

3. Antioxidant – Skinceuticals CE Ferulic

4. Treat – SkinMedica Lytera 2.0 for pigmentation

5. Eye cream – SkinMedica TNS Eye Repair

6. Moisturize – ZO Recovery Cream

7. SPF – ZO Sunscreen + Primer SPF 30

Why Skin? Why Injectables? Why PHI?

“Invest in your skin. It’s going to represent you for a very long time.”  It took me so long to realize this! I would spend ridiculous amounts of money on makeup to cover up what I did not like, then ended up feeling insecure if I did not have any makeup on. Invest and educate yourself on the right products for your skin because skincare and injectables are not a one size fits all. Injectables in the right hands can make you feel beautiful and confident without looking overdone.

Make up routine?

My go-to everyday look is my Naked neutral eyeshadow palette, light natural foundation, and a good pair of fluffy falsies. When I was younger, I was obsessed with BB creams made in Asia. BB creams always applied so well and never looked cakey. It was my skin but even better. A very comparable product I have found here is a CC cream by It Cosmetics. This is probably one makeup product that I repeatedly purchase. Another game-changer to my makeup routine that I should have jumped on a long time ago – microbladed eyebrows!

Body / Fragrance routine?

My favorite fragrance is Versace Pour Femme Dylan Blue. If you love a floral-fruity and woody composition, this one is for you!

Hair routine?

I am all about low maintenance hair color and style, but I also want it to look like I just came from the hair salon. My trick is to get a lot of layers in my hair, a balayage color and using the right hair products. I can get away with not going to the salon often because the regrowth is less noticeable. My hair is on the dry side caused by heat damage and too many long hot showers. Some of my favorite hair treatments are Aveda Smooth Infusion styling cream, Aveda Nurti Plenish leave-in conditioner, and Aveda Dry Remedy Daily moisturizing oil. These products are great at bringing my hair back to life.

What's special about your bathroom/make up area?

When we built our home, it was a must that I had a designated make-up area. In our previous home, I did my makeup on an office desk in one of our kid's rooms. Needless to say, it was a dream to create a space just for me and all my girly things.

Tell us something we don't know about you?

You already know that I have three young boys, but something you probably do not know is that I have three sisters that spoil those boys. Something I also realized when I was looking for a photo of all of us is that we need to take more pictures together. Sad to say but there is probably a 7-year gap between this photo and the last. Post-Covid reminder – hang out with sisters and take more pictures with them.

Where can we find you in Calgary?

You can find me doing an activity outside with the kids in Mahogany or you will find me at home! My husband and I are enjoying our homebody stage of life.

About to unwind in the tub...What do you bring? (Book? Wine? Magazine? Phone?)

The words unwind and bath is like an oxymoron in my household. I am usually on the other side of the bathtub filled with kids but that is okay because I am more of a long hot shower kind of girl anyway.

Favorite item of clothing

I have a super soft purple robe covered with moose from La Senza that my husband bought for me for Christmas about 11 years ago. It is not the most expensive thing nor is it the most stylish, but it is so cozy and comfortable that I still wear it to this day. If you follow me on my Instagram, you may or may not have seen me wear it in the #dontrushchallege video.

One lesson you learned this year..

Saying 2020 has presented many unforeseen challenges for people might be an understatement. Covid has sadly, for so many people, brought devastation, pain, and worry. For better or worse, the last seven months have changed us and have instilled life lessons about health, resilience, and the power of community.

One thing that I am grateful for is the tremendous opportunity to slow down, pause, focus on myself and my family. It helped me learn the value of self-care and the importance of building relationships and protecting the ones I have. Although it is undoubtedly still a time of uncertainty and confusion, there are some positive life lessons we can take away from all this. For now, I am choosing to focus on the things in my life that I can control and taking it one day at a time.
