Must-Do's Before Your Injectables Appointment

There are a few things to consider before adding your Botox and Filler appointments into your iCalendar. Please take all of these points into account for your own well-being, safety (most important) and of course the best aesthetic results.

1) Vitamins & Supplements
Make sure to carefully examine all of your vitamins & supplements before your appointment. Many people are aware that they need to avoid aspirin and NSAID’s like Ibuprofen, Aleve, Motrin, etc., but did you know that you should actually check what is in your multivitamin as well? To decrease your chances of bruising, you should try to avoid blood thinning ingredients like St. Johns Wort, Vitamin A, Fish Oil, Krill Oil, Flaxseed Oils, Omega-3, Ginseng, Garlic and Glucosamine.

2) Downtime
Aside from providing amazing results, what has made Botox and fillers so game-changing is that there’s zero downtime following the procedures. While you may experience some swelling and a bit of numbness, you can go back to work or get on with your day right after your appointment. However, with PRP for the face and SkinBooster treatments you might need to take a bit more caution when planning the rest of your day. If you have a major event coming up like a wedding, it is best to pre plan your injections so they are not too close.

3) Exercise?
Please wait 24 hours after your appointment before you hit up the gym or your favourite spin class. Waiting gives the injectable time to settle into the muscle and prevents it from moving out of the location where it was injected. You don’t want to do anything that could increase the risk of Botox acting in another area of your face. Exercising can also make bruising worse if you head to the gym too soon after your injections. Even if you didn’t bruise immediately, raising your blood pressure during an intense workout can lead to swelling in the injected area. This includes heavy cardio, massages, and hitting up a sauna or steam room at the gym.

4) Booze = Bruise
Although a girls night out is the best thing ever, try to schedule it at least a week before your appointment. Alcohol dilates blood vessels, causing them to expand and flow closer to the surface of the skin and be more susceptible to injury. The night before your appointment, skip the wine and get a good nights sleep to dream about your new defined cheekbones and smooth forehead.

5) Take that Selfie
Don’t be shy and go take a ‘before’ selfie before your appointment. In the photos try to scowl, raise your brows and smile, so you can really appreciate your results when the Botox and filler work it’s magic. Sometimes we forget our original wrinkles or even asymmetry we had before and it’s great to have a comparison point.

6) Know Your Goals
Have an idea of what you are trying to achieve, but be open minded to new suggestions. Remember your relationship with your injector is a two way street, we value what you like and will educate you on how to get there. Your injector at PHI will know what works best for your face and how to accomplish the mutual goals you both have established at the start of your injector-patient relationship. Even if you're coming in because there's just one pesky wrinkle bothering you, try and be open to suggestions. Often we hear “I want filler in this line” (when if fact the patient may need filler in the cheeks to lift the line) or they point to lines in their cheeks and ask for Botox when only fillers will work. Know your goals, but let us work with you on how to get you there.

7) Ice Ice Baby
After filler appointments, you should be prepared to ice for a few minutes following your treatment. By helping the blood vessels constrict, ice will keep swelling and bruising away.
