How to "Marie Kondo" your beauty cabinet
You have probably heard of Marie Kondo, the author of the best selling book “The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up”. Well she is sort of having a moment right now and here is why. Kondo promises that following her organization method will transform your home and life for good. Quite a few of our staff members have even adopted her method when downsizing and decluttering our homes. Not only does Marie Kondo have a dewy complexion to die for, she is a genius in organization and helping us all spark a little joy in our lives.
An area of the home dear to our hearts is the beauty drawer, counter, vanity or even all three. Free samples, expired products, even broken palettes can clutter up the most beautiful spaces. Here is a quick lesson on how to “Marie Kondo” your beauty space.
1) Commit to the process
Before you start organizing, commit yourself to the Marie Kondo lifestyle. Once you get the hang of only bringing items into your home that spark joy, you will create a space that encourages creativity, inspiration and tranquility.
2) Throw away expired products
Expired products may not only lack potency, but could also cause an adverse skin reaction. If you're unsure how old something is, the general rule is to toss anything that has significantly changed in color or odor, or separated, clumped, thickened or thinned. Moisturizers and sunscreens are good for two to three years when unopened, but as soon as you use it for the first time make sure you keep them for only 6 months to one year. Treatment products such as retinols or serums are potent for one year whether or not they have been opened. Alright beauties, lets go find the expired items in your drawers and say goodbye to them the Marie Kondo way.
3) Decide which remaining ones “Spark Joy”
Kondo recommends gathering all remaining products together by category, then hold each item in your hands, dig deep and decide if each item actually sparks joy. If it doesn’t and you are holding onto it based on the “someday I will use it” philosophy, it’s probably a sign to say thank you and discard.
4) “BeautiPHI” your space
Now it’s time to put these treasured products on display. Make-up and skincare are used to make us beautiful, so they should be stored in a beautiful way. There is no reason why your bathroom can’t resemble a Pinterest worthy board. So go search the hashtag #shelfie on Instagram for some major real life inspo. We like to organize lotions and potions in our vanities, stacked on glass stackers with brass accessories. Then, we organize based on our morning vs nightly routines for easy accessibility when we are trying to get out the door.
