Sure you can have a younger looking complexion with a good medical grade skin care regime and some well placed highlighter, but sometimes you need just a little more help in the wrinkle department. Botox is used to relax wrinkles and is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments today. Botox may get a bad rap, thanks to some certain housewives on TV, but don’t let that mislead you. Despite it’s increasing popularity, there are still many myths and misconceptions around Botox. This makes it all the more important to be informed before you walk into our sparkly floored dream space. Here are some popular Botox myth’s we get asked all the time…

First off…..What is Botox?
Botox is a purified protein that temporarily prevents the communication between your nerves and your muscle. So even though your brain may fire and signal for your body to move a particular muscle in your face, Botox effectively blocks that firing and the injected muscle can no longer contract. This will make your wrinkles soften and also help prevent new wrinkles from forming.

Myth 1 - Botox lasts 6 months or more
Sadly, not true! On average, a patient will regain full motion of the treated muscles about three to four months after the Botox treatment. The upper forehead is always the first to move and this is for good reason. We don’t dose the upper forehead as high because the muscle is thinner and there is a risk of dropping the brows. That muscle is also the only elevator in the forehead, so we need to treat with care.

Myth 2 - Botox injections are just for wrinkles
Botox can in fact be a preventative treatment to stop the formation of wrinkles and lines. Think, the less you move your face earlier on = the less wrinkles you will have in the long run. Botox is extremely helpful for medical conditions such as TMJ, Hyperhidrosis and Migraines, which we can treat here at PHI. You can also use Botox for facial slimming and even a “Lip Flip”.

Myth 3 - Botox injections will leave me looking frozen and fake
No way, not when you come to @beauty_phi ! Many people think that getting Botox injections will make them lose the ability to emote completely or make facial expressions. This is a myth; the treatment only relaxes the muscles at the injection point. With a skilled injector from PHI, you will still be able to smile, frown and appear surprised. However, when a neuromodulator is overused or injected in the wrong area, you can risk looking frozen. You will find the best Botox injectors in Calgary here at PHI. We are all industry experts with experience, patience and we understand the muscles in your face and how they interact.

Myth 4 - Your skin will look different after Botox wears off
Once Botox begins to wear off the skin will revert back to baseline. There’s a common misconception that the lines will be worse than they were when you started, but with Botox there is one thing that is for sure…. if you continuously get Botox for 10+ years you will certainly look much younger and have fewer wrinkles. Your skin will look much smoother and the appearance of fine lines and deep wrinkles will be diminished. That’s the beauty of Botox.

Myth 5- Botox can be used on all wrinkles
No! Depending on where the wrinkle sits and if it is static or dynamic, filler may be a better option. A good rule of thumb is “Lines of expression need Botox, lines at rest need filler. You should also keep in mind that Botox and dermal fillers treat slightly different problems and are usually used in different areas of the face. They may also be used in conjunction as complimentary treatments to achieve your desired results. Your PHI injector will go over all your options for you.
